The Item Upgrader in World of Warcraft
The War Within introduced two gear upgrade currencies: Valorstones and Harbinger Crests. They can be exchanged at the NPCs for upgrading items, Cuzolth and Vaskarn.
Each item may be upgraded up to the maximum level once for one slot. Upgrades to that slot are then cheaper afterward. In addition, the pity system introduced in The War Within lowers extreme chance of winning upgrades.
Upgrades
Upgrades are elements that boost performance or add new features. Upgrades can be bought or earned in many ways including through in-game events or cash shop items.
Upgrades are only available to specific items. Unlike enchantments which can be added to anything, upgrades are only available to the item they are attached to. Therefore, an upgrade cannot be applied to a weapon until it already has the equipment of a player. However, item upgrading can be upgraded multiple times, providing a much better benefit to the user of the item.
Upgrades are a fairly new mechanic that was introduced in patch 4.1.0. The upgrade system allows the player to add additional enhancements to their equipment to increase it's power. This can range from basic strength increases to significant damage and defence boosts. The upgrades are separated into tracks and each track has an upper limit on the amount of upgrades that can be done. These limits are intended to prevent players from spamming low keystone dungeons for equipment, only to upgrade it all the way up.
The gear that can be upgraded includes armor, weapons and consumables. The majority of gear is upgraded after it drops. However, certain items (such Ornn's equipment or the infant Dracolich) are not upgradeable. Gear can be upgraded to higher levels by buying a recipe from an upgrade vendor, then joining it with an item that is in the appropriate upgrade slot. One can check how many upgrades a piece of equipment can be upgraded by looking at its inventory icon or by searching for that item in the shop.
The upgrade system has two major drawbacks. It can be difficult to identify what items are eligible for upgrade as upgrade vendors don’t always show all of them. The upgrade textures are created over the model which hides enchantment information as well as other details.
The other drawback is that upgrades are costly. Each step in a gear's level of improvement costs a specific amount of Valorstones or crests based on the slot and the item level.
